Tourism summer season 2021: 20.7 million nights spent in August mark a record high

Vienna, 2021-09-28 – According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, 20.66 million nights spent in Austrian accommodation establishments were reported for August 2021.

"Austrian tourism is on its way out of the Corona crisis and achieved a new overnight stay record in August 2021. With 20.66 million nights spent, the previous overnight stay record from August 2019 was exceeded by 2.3%. This is mainly due to the extraordinarily high increase in overnight stays by German guests with +25.0% and resident guests with +14.3% compared to August 2019," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Compared to August 2020, nights spent by resident guests decreased by 7.2% to 6.18 million, while overnight stays of foreign guests increased by 27.8% to 14.48 million.

The strongest foreign market of origin in August 2021 was Germany (9.6 million; +21.1%), followed by the Netherlands (1.76 million; +49.4%) and Italy (0.44 million; +20.1%).

The total number of arrivals increased by 12.3% to 5.18 million compared to August 2020; 28.1% more arrivals of non-resident guests and 7.8% fewer arrivals of resident guests were reported than in August of the previous year.

There are still strong regional differences in the development of nights spent in August compared to the pre-crisis level

While Vorarlberg (+13.5%), Styria (+11.5%) and Tyrol (+10.3%) showed double-digit growth in nights spent compared to the corresponding pre-crisis month August 2019, nights spent in Vienna (-50.8%), Lower Austria (-11.0%) and Upper Austria (-4.0%) developed negatively. The declines are also due to the absence of non-resident guests in August 2021, with nights spent by resident guests also declining in Vienna. In Carinthia (+9.3%), Burgenland (+8.2%) and Salzburg (+6.3%) more nights spent were reported than in August 2019.

Current summer season stronger than previous year

Due to the high number of nights spent in August, the first half of the tourist summer season 2021 (May to August) with a total of 46.6 million nights spent was 17.7% higher than that of the previous year. The rise in nights spent by non-resident guests (+24.7% or +5.88 million) and overnights stays by resident guests (+7.1% or +1.12 million) is responsible for the increase.

However, due to the different periods of pandemic-related company and border closings in both summer seasons, the developments are only conditionally comparable.

Fewer nights spent in the current calendar year compared to 2020

Despite a significant increase in nights spent in the previous summer season, the current calendar year 2021 (January to August) recorded 50.32 million nights spent, 38.5% fewer than in the same period of the previous year; this is due to the Europe-wide travel restrictions in the first third of the year. As a result, the drop in nights spent among resident guests was significantly lower (-18.0% to 19.60 million) than that among non-resident guests (-46.9% to 30.73 million). The number of arrivals in the previous calendar year is 13.38 million, well below the corresponding period of the previous year (-34.7%).
