Tourism makes varying contributions to regional value added and employment depending on the federal province. Since 2002 and up to and including the reference year 2017, regional tourism satellite accounts (RTSAs) have been commissioned at different intervals by Burgenland, Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Vienna in order to be able to record the respective regional economic significance in monetary terms. For the reporting year 2018, RTSAs were available for eight federal provinces for the first time, with the value added as well as employment effects of tourism calculated on the basis of a commission coordinated between the federal provinces. This novelty is now continued for the reporting year 2021.
The RTSAs are based on the methodological principles for national TSAs recommended by international organizations and the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010). Several relevant internal and external data sources are brought together to regional satellite accounts.
