The survey of rail passenger transport covers domestic and foreign railway undertakings and integrated railway undertakings which transport passengers on Austrian territory. Railway undertakings which mainly provide local tourist services, such as historic steam railways, are excluded. Transportation by metro, also known as subway or underground, as well as by light rail and trams is also excluded. Data on rail passenger transport, which relates to one reference year, is collected by Schienen Control GmbH and transmitted to Statistics Austria. Important key figures are the number of carried passengers and the passenger-kilometres travelled on railway undertakings. These results are published annually.
