Migration
In our data, migration is defined as a change of someone's main residence. International migration covers all changes of residence between foreign countries and is also referred to as external migration. All changes of residence within the borders of a country are considered internal migrations. Internal migrations can be further distinguished by changes of residence within a given entity (e.g. countries, federal provinces, political districts, municipalities) without crossing administrative boundaries.
Since 2002, migration statistics have been based on administrative registrations and deregistrations of main residencies in the Central Residence Register. This enables all changes of residence from abroad to Austria and from Austria to abroad to be statistically recorded. Only persons who have registered a main residence in Austria for at least 90 consecutive days are included.
