International migration
International migration refers to migration flows across national borders. The difference between international immigration and emigration constitutes net international migration. Alongside the balance of births and deaths, this is one of the main components of population change.
Since 2002, migration statistics have been based on administrative registrations and deregistrations of main residencies in the Central Population Register. This enables all changes of residence from abroad to Austria and from Austria to abroad to be statistically recorded. Only persons who have registered a main residence in Austria for at least 90 consecutive days are included.
