Population in private households by foreign background

Persons of foreign background are defined as people whose parents were both born abroad. This group can be divided into first-generation immigrants (people who were born abroad themselves) and second-generation immigrants (people who wer born in the country but whose parents were both born abroad). This definition of migration (forgein) background follows the "Recommendations for the 2020 censuses of population and housing" of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) with respect to foreign background. According to these definitions, a person whose parents (mother and father) were born abroad has foreign background.

Information on the parents’ country of birth has been collected in the Microcensus Labour Force Survey since 2008. Since then, it has been possible to show the population in private households according to the definition of foreign background described here on the basis of the microcensus. Since the Census 2021, there are also results regarding persons of foreign background within the framework of the Register-based Census and the Register-based Labour Market Statistics available.

This group can be divided into migrants of the first (born abroad) and the second generation (born in Austria; children of first generation). – Projected data from a 0.6% quarterly sample (annual average).
