As an important component of population statistics, the statistics on marriages have a tradition going back to the 18th century, in the sense of a systematic recording of marriages by the religious communities. Since 1945, they have been based on the reports of Austria’s registry offices intended for administrative purposes. From 2010, the reports on the establishment of registered partnerships were added. Since 01 November 2014, these reports have been automatically transmitted from the Central Civil Status Register to Statistics Austria. Since 2015, all marriages and registered partnerships of Austrian citizens with their main residence in Austria that took place abroad have also been recorded. The regional allocation of the data is based on the common place of residence of the partners. In the case of separate residences, by the man's place of residence in the case of opposite-sex couples, or by the older person's place of residence in the case of same-sex couples.
