Statistics on divorces have existed in Austria since 1884. Until 1938 the confessional marriage law applied, which defined the “separation of marriage according to the bond” as what is now meant by divorce. Since 1938, divorces in today’s sense have been possible. Statistics on divorces and, as of 2010, on dissolutions of registered partnerships are based on the information on legally binding divorce and dissolution judgments and orders of the district courts of Austria. Since 2018, an additional comparison has been made with the data transmitted by the Central Civil Status Register. Therefore, since then, divorces and dissolutions of registered partnerships of Austrian residents that take place abroad have also been included. The regional allocation of the data is based on the common place of residence of the partners. In the case of separate residences, by the man's place of residence in the case of opposite-sex couples, or by the older person's place of residence in the case of same-sex couples.
