Population projecions for Austria and federal states

In the population forecast, the population differentiated by federal states, age, gender and country of birth is extrapolated into the future. The new birth cohorts are calculated using age-specific fertility rates. Death rates are derived from extrapolated mortality probabilities. While international emigration is calculated from hazard rates, immigration is given in absolute numbers. Internal migration between the federal provinces is modeled using emigration rates. In order to document the uncertainties of future developments, the population forecast is calculated in several variants based on different combinations of high, medium and low assumptions for the forecast parameters fertility, mortality and migration. The main variant uses the medium assumption sets and depicts the most probable development path. The rounded results are published as web tables and STATcube datasets. For (model) calculations, the raw data is also available; part of this data is published as a web table. Further raw data can be requested by e-mail.

S: STATISTICS AUSTRIA, Population Projection 2022 (rounded results). Compiled on 20 December 2022. - In 2022, there was an error in the age distribution parameter used for immigration in the population projection. This had an impact on the forecast age structure of the population and, as a result, also on the projection of the total population. The error was corrected on December 20th 2022.
