The statistics on infants who died as part of the statistics on deaths have a tradition going back to the 18th century, in the sense of a systematic recording of deaths by the religious communities. Since 1945, it has been based on the reports of the registry offices of Austria intended for administrative purposes, which in turn are partly based on reports of hospitals and medical examiners on the cause of death. Since 1 november 2014, the reports on infants who died have been automatically transmitted daily from the Central Civil Status Register to Statistics Austria. Since 2015, all infants with Austrian citizenship and main residence in Austria who died abroad have also been recorded. Data on Deceased Infants are published according to the last place of residence and enriched with the medical characteristics of the birth.
