The area on private debt comprises information about indebtedness of private households and persons in Austria. The statistics of enforcement proceedings include the number of state coercive measures requested from courts in Austria to enforce a legitimate claim through civil proceedings. These proceedings include for example the enforcement of monetary claims, the eviction of property and the enforcement of obligations to act.

The data is available for the year 2019 and onwards. The annual datasets contain information about the debtor, the competent court, and the nature of the claim (especially the enforcement measures and the value in dispute).

Reading aid: In 2023 there were 585 202 claims to enforce movable property against individual persons (multiple counts of persons included). Each person and each enforcement measure is counted individually, even if they are part of the same enforcement proceeding. – 1) Refers to all measures enforcing monetary claims, e.g. attachment of salary or bank accounts. – 2) Refers to all enforcement measures against immovable property, e.g. foreclosure. – 3) The extended enforcement package per § 20 of “Exekutionsordnung” (Enforcement regulation – Enforcement Code, EO) has been in place since 1 July 2021.
