Private households spend a substantial part of their income on housing. Statistics on housing costs contain information on both rental and total housing stock, and encompass various financial aspects of housing. On the one hand, the development of rents per quarter is shown; on the other hand, the total housing costs for all primary residences is provided. The total housing costs include running costs, energy costs, maintenance costs and rental costs as well as the interest portion of the mortgage repayments. The share of housing costs in household income is also recorded.
The data is sourced from two sample surveys. The Microcensus housing survey continuously collects data on the monthly rents and running costs of rental households, which are published every quarter. EU-SILC collects data on the monthly housing costs, energy costs and housing cost burden of Austrian private households every year.
