Health impairments make it difficult or impossible for people to perform everyday tasks and participate in social activities. Functional limitations in old age can lead to a person needing assistance or care. Therefore, it is important to collect information on the functional health status of the population.

The Austrian Health Interview Survey (ATHIS) contains questions on perceived limitations in sensory function, mobility and cognitive abilities as well as a subjective assessment of problems in activities of daily living and in household activities that make independent living difficult or impossible. ATHIS has been conducted every six years since 2019 (previously 2006/07 and 2014).
