Outpatient medical care for the population is provided on three tracks. The largest share is provided by general practitioners, specialists and dentists in their practices. The “extramural sector” of outpatient care also includes the outpatient clinics of the health insurance funds as well as other (privately run) independent outpatient clinics. In addition, hospital outpatient departments are available in hospitals (“intramural sector”) for outpatient care. Other health care professions such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, midwives, speech therapists, etc. also provide outpatient care.

Statistics on the use of outpatient health care come from the Austrian Health Interview Survey (ATHIS), which is held every six years from 2019  (previously 2006/07 and 2014).
