The statistics on school successes contain annual data on pupils who were eligible to move up to the next level or who successfully completed the last level of a course of education (also including pupils who had retaken examinations or similar) at the end of a school year. The statistics on foreign languages include, also as of the end of a school year, annual data on pupils who participated in foreign language instruction. The regional presentation of the results is generally done mainly at the federal province level.

The legal basis is the Federal Act on Documentation in Education (Bildungsdokumentationsgesetz 2020) and the ordinances of the ministries responsible for the particular school types.
