PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies) is an ongoing international program by the OECD that assesses basic skills (literacy, numeracy, and adaptive problem solving) among adults aged 16 to 65.
In Austria, the study is conducted by Statistics Austria on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.

The 2022/23 survey marks the second international comparison after 2011/12. The results are published in three publications:
Volume 1 focuses on the distribution of basic skills in relation to sociodemographic factors such as gender, age, and educational attainment.
Volume 2 offers in-depth analyses of the links between basic skills and labor market characteristics, as well as reading habits in both leisure and work contexts.
The expert report comprises a total of twelve contributions with in-depth analyses by scientists from various research disciplines.
