Public finance statistics of regional authorities (federal government, state governments, Vienna as a state and local government, local governments and associations of local authorities) provide important information about public finances. The statistic is the basis for national (intergovernmental fiscal relations and Austrian Stability Pact) and international purposes (Maastricht EDP indicators, government finance statistics, national accounts). The regulation on public finance statistics (Gebarungsstatistik-Verordnung), Federal Law Gazette II No. 345/2013, ensures the delivery of this information to Statistics Austria.

As of January 2020, the new budget law (regulated in the Budgeting and Accounts Regulation, VRV 2015) came into force for state governments and local governments. The federal government had already switched to the new system in 2013. Thus, a comparable set of indicators from all three accounts (profit and loss accounts, cash flow statements and balance sheet data) is available for all sectors of government from the reporting year 2020 onwards.
