Commuter statistics consist of two elements: workplace commuters and pupils or student commuters. The statistics on workplace commuters provide an overview of the distances covered to reach the place of work. Workplace commuters are employed ("at work") persons who travel between their place of main residence and their place of work. The statistics on workplace commuters also cover pupils or students who are in employment as well. Inbound commuters from abroad are not included.
Until 2001, statistics on commuters were only compiled as part of the decennial census rounds. Following the transition to register-based census methods, they have been published yearly since 2009. The commuter statistics are part of the Population Census and the Register-based Labour Market Statistics (made available on the reference date of 31 October).
