Global value chains are an important factor in the international organisation of enterprises’ economic activities. Official data on the topic, however, are still rare. The aim of a voluntary pilot survey conducted in 2021 thus was to get more information on the involvement of Austrian enterprises in international supply chains and on their outsourcing activities during the reference years 2018-2020.

Austrian enterprises were surveyed about domestic and international outsourcing of their business functions, which business functions they outsourced as well as the motivations behind. Furthermore, data on the enterprises’ involvement in global value chains were collected in a new specification. Data was collected from enterprises employing 50 persons at least. Response rate in the voluntary survey was about 20 %, results are thus to be interpreted with adequate caution. The survey received a co-funding by the European Union.
