"The Environmental Goods and Services Sector" (EGSS) method was developed in order to reflect the environmental economy in a comprehensive and internationally comparable form. On the one hand, it comprises the totality of activities aimed at measuring, avoiding, reducing, limiting or remedying environmental damage. This includes environmentally friendly or less polluting technologies, processes and products that reduce environmental risks and minimize pollution.
On the other hand, it focuses on the careful use of natural resources. This results mainly in resource-efficient goods, technologies and services.

The accounts on the environmental goods and services sector, which are published annually at the national and at federal province levels, are based on various basic statistics of Statistics Austria, supplemented by a survey and numerous external data sources.

S: STATISTICS AUSTRIA, Environmental goods and services sector (EGSS). Compiled on 28 November 2025.
