The basic survey of areas under vine provides important information about the structure of the Austrian viticulture (number of holdings, size, area, grape varieties, and age of the vines). According to EU-Regulations, the survey is to be conducted every five years. From 2026 onwards, it will take place as a module of the Integrated Farm Statistics (IFS) data collection.
The wine-ONLINE system of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism (BMLRT) served as data source for the wine-producing federal provinces of Burgenland, Lower Austria, Styria and Vienna. Data for the federal province Carinthia was obtained from the federal viticulture cadaster. Statistics Austria collected the data for the remaining federal provinces of Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg by means of a written questionnaire to the farmers.
In future, the wine cadaster will draw data from IACS (Integrated Administration and Control System), providing administrative data for all federal provinces.
