Pigs, sheep and goats: Under the title "General livestock survey", around 7 000 farms are directly surveyed using a stratified random sample every year for the reference date 1 December. These livestock reports of pigs, sheep and goats are extrapolated to federal province and national results. The annual calculation of the pig population for the reference date 1 June has been carried out using a regression model based on data from the consumer health information system (VIS).
Bovines: The separate determination of the bovine population is carried out for both reference dates by evaluating the central cattle database of Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA). The results are derived from an intersection of AMA and Rinderzucht Austria data, with the detailed processing of the results carried out by Statistics Austria since June 2022 (prior to that: Federal Institute of Agricultural Economics, Rural and Mountain Research).
Chickens: The number of chickens kept on agricultural holdings is determined using data from the Quality Poultry Association (QGV), AMA and VIS. Based on the EU regulation 2023/2745, the number of chickens is reported annually as a daily average livestock from 2025 onwards.
