INSPIRE

Description

A European spatial data infrastructure is being set up based on the INSPIRE -  Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of March 14th, 2007. It will enable the sharing of environmental spatial information among public sector organisations and facilitate public access to spatial information across Europe. INSPIRE is intended to support decision-making related to policies and measures that may have a direct or indirect impact on the environment.

On March 2, 2010, Austria implemented this directive into national law with the Geodata Infrastructure Act (GeoDIG). The spatial data infrastructure was implemented step by step in accordance with the INSPIRE roadmap. Further information can also be found on the website of the European Commission on the INSPIRE Directive and on the website of INSPIRE Austria.

INSPIRE Services of Statistics Austria

Statistics Austria provides data sets for the INSPIRE data themes "Population distribution - demography", "Statistical units" and "Human health and safety" via INSPIRE network services. All INSPIRE datasets and network services of Statistics Austria are accessible through the discovery service of Statistics Austria (metadata) and through the national or European geoportal.

INSPIRE Geoportals

Geoportal INSPIRE Austria is the official website of INSPIRE Austria. In addition to general information about INSPIRE in Austria, there is also a link to the national metadata search. This metadata search accesses the discovery service, which represents the Austrian top node and which is queried by the INSPIRE Geoportal.

The INSPIRE Geoportal is the central access point to INSPIRE datasets of the EU members states and some EFTA countries on a European level. It enables the discovery of datasets based on their descriptions (metadata) and access to these via view and download services. For this purpose, the geoportal regularly harvests the metadata of the discovery services of the EU member states and EFTA countries.
