Environmental justice looks at how environmental problems affect people with different income levels and how income influences environmentally relevant behaviour. This report, the third in a series, examines differences between income groups in their perceptions of environmental quality and their exposure to noise, dust, and heat. It also explores whether income affects environmentally friendly consumer choices, such as online shopping, financial products, holiday choices, and transport use.
For the first time, the study examines the combined effects of several environmental problems, including noise, dust, soot, heat, and climate change impacts, across income groups. The results show even more clearly that lower-income households are more affected by environmental problems than higher-income households. Likewise, when potential environmental impacts associated with shopping behaviour, transport choices, and air travel are combined, these behaviours increase significantly as household income rises.
