The Housing Census is part of the Register-based Census as well as the Population Census and the Census of Local Units of Employment. The Housing Census records the entire building and dwelling stock in Austria. The results are needed by politicians, administrators, scientists, the media and the population to plan, implement and evaluate projects.
Since 2011, the Housing Census has been carried out as a register-based census, instead of a survey using questionnaires. The base register for the Housing Census is the Buildings and Dwellings Register (BDR), which was established in 2004. The municipalities are responsible for data updates. The register itself is set up at Statistics Austria. Additional information about buildings and dwellings is also collected from the Central Residence Register (CRR).
