Consumer prices are collected monthly and form the basis for calculating the inflation rate. They are carried out in the form of personal surveys or by means of electronic data transmission (scanner data and web scraping). The personal survey is carried out by using electronic survey forms on electronic devices in 19 selected cities by municipal employees at the local units or centrally by Statistics Austria staff. Prices that are collected by Statistik Austria staff are characterised by their similarity throughout Austria (e.g. cigarettes) or nationwide (e.g. insurance companies) and the complexity of the survey (e.g. technical devices). The survey using scanner data is only carried out in retail (e.g. food), the survey using web scraping is intended to depict online trade in the relevant sectors (e.g. clothing).
