The "Mini" Register-Based Census had to be based on the results of the test census from 2006. Therefore, it was necessary in the course of the test census, to also conduct the residence analysis, which verifies/falsifies the main residence declarations of the Central Population Register for all of Austria. That way, the non-inclusion quota for the population of each municipality was established for the test census 2006.

The basic procedure of the "Mini" Register-Based Census, which means linking data from the various registers, does not differ from the test census or the actual Register-Based Census. Only the residence analysis is replaced by a statistical procedure, which is based on the experience gained during the test census.

In the course of the "Mini" Register-Based Census, the population number for the reference date 31 October 2008 for the financial year 2010 was published in November 2009.
