Considering federal provinces, most driving licences were issued in Upper Austria (17 800) followed by Lower Austria (17 200). 70% of novice-drivers were aged 16 to 18 years, 93% were younger than 25 years. 51% of all new licence holders were male, 49% female.

Since March 1999, it is possible to obtain a driving licence for category B at the age of 17. After 3 000 verifiably driven kilometers with an accompanying person ("L17 trainee drive") and passing the feedback drive at the driving school as from the completion of the seventeenth year, it is allowed to take the theoretical and practical driving test. Among the approx. 88 400 novice car drivers, some 19 700 people obtained the B-driving licence at the age of 17 ("L17"). A further 1 400 people attending this model were – when receiving the B-driving licence – 18 years old, 257 even older.
