According to the legal framework a survey on the rolling stock of Austrian based railway operating companies and integrated railway companies as well as on the length of the Austrian railway network operated by Austrian based infrastructure managers or integrated railway companies were conducted.

Austrian based railway operating companies and integrated railway companies were registered vehicle keeper of a total of 1 436 locomotives (reference date: December 31 2010) out of which 898 were electric locos, 520 used Diesel and the rest used other sources of power.

There were further 645 railcars (420 electric, 225 Diesel railcars) and 34 electric motorised trains, 2 524 passenger wagons as well as 21 015 freight wagons.

As of December 31 2010 the network comprised railway lines of 5 989 kilometres (km) (construction length) of which 5 828 km were actually operated. 3 933 km (construction length) and 3 781 km (operated length) were single track lines respectively.

Referring to the respective track gauge 5 654 km (construction length) and 5 509 km (operated length) corresponded to the ESG (European Standard Gauge) of 1 435 mm while 334 km (construction length) and 319 km (operated length) were narrow gauge lines.
