Pensions

In 2010 a total of 2 681 391 pensions were paid. Of this figure 83% came from statutory pension insurance and 12% were civil servants’ pensions. The remainder were made up of pensions received by accident insurance (4%) and by war victims’ and military service maintenance as well as by maintenance for victims of fighting for a free Austria or of political persecution.

Statutory pension insurance and civil servants’  pensions

Altogether 2 215 614 persons were in receipt of a civil servants’ and/or statutory pension insurance pension in 2010 with 14% of this number receiving two or more pensions. Amongst women there were 21% multiple recipients. This is primarily because of receipt of a widow’s/widower’s pension in addition to the pension in their own right.

In total 1 704 194 direct pensions and 515 729 survivors’ pensions were paid from the statutory pension insurance in 2010. Almost half of all pensions were paid by the pension insurance institution (Pensionsversicherungsanstalt) to blue collar workers and more than one-third to white collar workers. Within the area of self-employed insurance (350 650 pensions) the Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution (Sozialversicherungsanstalt der Bauern) paid out the largest number of pensions (57%).

In 2010, men receiving invalidity pension from the statutory pension insurance for the first time aged on average 53.5 years and women 50.1 years. Old age pension was paid first at 62.6 or 59.3 years respectively and amounted on average to €1 607 for men and €1 014 for women (including supplements).

Accident insurance

The average disability benefit received by the accident insurance (excluding additional pensions and supplements) was €342 per month in 2010. Altogether 87 250 direct pensions and 16 333 survivors’ pensions were paid. 11% of these direct pensions were paid a supplement pension for persons with a severe disability.

War victims and military service maintenance, maintenance for victims of fighting for a free Austria or of political persecution

The number of pensions for health damage pursuant to the War Victims’ Maintenance Act decreased from 95 231 in 1980 to 10 630 at the beginning of 2011. In 201, pensions were received by 1 308 victims of the resistance struggle pursuant to the Victims of Fighting for a Free Austria or of Political Persecution Act and by 1 757 military conscripts, women, compulsory civilian service trainees and soldiers pursuant to the Military Service Maintenance Act who had suffered damage to their health in the execution of their duties. All above-mentioned compensation systems also pay benefits to the survivors of the injured person.
