At the end of 2009 a total of 365 810 people received a long-term care
allowance on the basis of the Federal Act for Long-Term Care Allowance.
Since this Act came into force at the beginning of July 1993, the long-term
care allowance has been awarded according to the required care needs
(and regardless of income and assets) at seven allowance levels (2009
level 1: €154.20; level 2: €284.30; level 3: €442.90; level 4:
€664.30; level 5: €902.30; level 6: €1 242.00; level 7: €1 655.80).
For 91% of people requiring care, the pension insurance authority pays
the allowance, while the remainder draw the allowance from the accident
insurance or another federal authority. Compared with the end of 1999, the number of beneficiaries of federal long-term
care allowance rose by more than 86 900 people
More than two thirds are women (1999: 68%, 2009: 67%).

Expenditure on the federal long-term care allowance in 2009
was around €1.94 billion
At the end of 2010 the number of beneficiaries of federal long-term care allowance (exclusive of teachers employed by the Laender and people receiving benefits based on social indemnification acts) has been a total of 369 172 people (end of 2009: 362 116). The annual expenditure was around €1.97 billion (2009: €1.87 billion).
