Innovation statistics

More than half of the Austrian enterprises (56%) were “innovation active” over the period 2006-2008. These enterprises had either introduced new or significantly improved products onto the market, introduced new or significantly improved processes in their enterprise, implemented an organisational or a marketing innovation, or at least carried out innovation activities aimed at introducing product or process innovations. These are the results of a survey by STATISTICS AUSTRIA among 3 500 enterprises of 10 or more employees in the following economic sectors: Mining and quarrying; manufacturing; electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply; water supply; wholesale trade; transportation and storage; information and communication; financial and insurance activities; architectural and engineering activities.

During the reference period, 31% of enterprises introduced new or significantly improved goods or services onto the market. In 2008, around 11% of total turnover fell upon these product innovations. 5.5% of total turnover accounted for market novelties, 6% fell upon product innovations which were not new to the market, but new to the enterprise. Altogether, 21% of the enterprises (two thirds of all product innovators) introduced market novelties onto their market. In 32% of the enterprises new or significantly improved processes were introduced. These process innovations included new or significantly improved methods for manufacturing goods or services, new or significantly improved logistics, delivery or distribution methods, and new or significantly improved support activities for processes. 43% of all enterprises have either introduced product or process innovations or had innovation activities targeting at introduction of such innovation, and were therefore “technological innovators”.

35% of all enterprises have introduced organisational innovations. These are new organisational methods in the enterprise’s business practices, workplace organisation or external relations. 27% of enterprises reported the introduction of a marketing innovation, which covers the implementation of a new marketing concept or strategy. 44% of all enterprises have introduced at least one of these two innovation types (“non-technological innovators”).

40% of all technological innovators received public funding for their innovations. 39% of all technological innovators co-operated with other institutions during the innovation process. The introduction of an innovation with environmental benefits (“eco-innovation”) was reported by 61% of all innovation active enterprises.
