Population at Census Day
According to the definitive result of the Register Based Census Test held on 31 October 2006, Austria had 8 281 295 inhabitants. The number of inhabitants has risen by 248 369 people or 3.1% since 2001. By comparison, the increase between 1991 and 2001 was 237 140 people or 3.0%. The population growth within the last five years was higher than in the 10-year-period before, a result of the increase of immigration into Austria since the turn of the millennium. In contrast, the natural increase (balance of births and deaths) made only a comparatively small contribution to population growth.
The population increase of 3.1% was not uniform throughout
Austria. Based on a percentage increase, Vienna was the clear winner
with a growth of 7.2%. Besides the federal capital, only Tyrol
The greater proportion of the population lives in eastern Austria. Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland comprise the eastern region, where 42.6% of the population live on 28.1% of the national territory. The four federal provinces that make up the western region (Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg) count 36.1% of the population on 41.0% of the national territory. The southern region (comprising the federal provinces of Carinthia and Styria) covers 30.9% of Austria’s land area, but is inhabited by only 21.3% of the population.
