Regional GDP and main aggregates by industry and 35 NUTS 3 regions

Within Regional Accounts, the following aggregates are calculated for the 35 Austrian NUTS 3 regions: gross regional product (GRP = regional GDP), gross value added and employment (total and employees).

The results of regional accounts data are consistent with the annual national accounts main aggregates published in July 2009. Statistics Austria publishes NUTS 3 data presently by A3 (A+B, C+D+E+F, G to P); A6 can be provided on request.

Gross regional product per inhabitant

Measured by GDP per capita (regional gross domestic product per inhabitant at current prices), the capital Wien (Vienna) continued to enjoy the lead with a figure of €43 300 in 2007. It was followed by the regions Linz-Wels (€41 900), Salzburg und Umgebung (€40 900) and Wiener Umland Südteil (€38 700); the region Graz was in fifth place with €37 900. The regions with the lowest gross regional product per capita were Weinviertel with €16 500, Mühlviertel with €18 100 and Südburgenland (€19 100). Austria had a GDP of €32 600 per inhabitant in 2007. Only 10 of the 35 NUTS 3 regions were above the national average, with the remaining 25 regions below it. The regions where the provincial capitals are located mostly achieved an above-average GDP per capita. The exceptions are Klagenfurt-Villach and St. Pölten, which were just below the Austrian average with €32 100 and €32 200 respectively, and Nordburgenland with €23 800. The top 10 regions included also the Außerfern, the region Bludenz–Bregenzer Wald and Tiroler Unterland. Except for the provincial capital regions and Wien, a west-east divide was apparent.

However, it should be borne in mind that gross regional product (GRP) relates to the place of performance (place of work), whereas the inhabitant figures seen in relation to GRP relate to the place of residence, i.e. transregional commuter movements are not taken into account. (Provincial) capitals, for example, are traditional regions where employees are commuting in.

Gross regional product in absolute terms

Wien (Vienna) had by far the highest economic output of the NUTS 3 regions, with a gross regional product of €72.3 bn in 2007, equating to a 26.7% share of the Austrian total of around €270.8 bn. The second largest region, Linz-Wels, accounted for approximately 8.4% of total Austrian GDP with a GRP of €22.8 bn, and was followed by Graz with a GRP of €14.7 bn (5.4% share) and Salzburg und Umgebung with €14.0 bn (5.2% share). The weakly polulated regions Lungau, Mittelburgenland, Außerfern and Osttirol, generated altogether less than 1.5% of GDP.
