Volume of work

The volume of work (number of hours actually worked in main and second job) amounted to 1 billion 724 million working hours in the third quarter of 2011, 87 million hours less than in the second quarter of 2011 and 7 million hours more than in the third quarter of 2010. 1 billion 694 million hours were recorded in main jobs and 29 million hours in second jobs. Overtime decreased from 76 million hours in the third quarter of 2010 to 72 million hours in the third quarter of 2011.

The volume of work (working hours actually worked) in the main job amounted in the year 2010 to 6 billion 875 million hours. Including work in a secondary occupation, 6 billion 977 million hours were worked. Employees worked 5 billion 699 million hours in 2010 (2009: 5 698 billion hours). Thus for all persons employed the volume of work increased within the last year, for employees the volume of work stayed at the level of 2009.

Note: According to ILO-Definition (Labour Force Concept), employed persons are those who worked at least one hour in the reference week or who did not work owing to holiday leave, illness etc. but who otherwise normally pursue a job. Individuals in a period of parental leave are not considered here.
