Health care staff

At year’s end 2005, non-medical specialised staff included 49 294 persons working in the service sector of higher-level services for health care and nursing; 9 773 nursing assistants; 10 704 persons in the service sector of higher-level medical and technical services; 2 109 persons in the sector of specialist medical and technical services; and 4 109 persons in the sector of auxiliary medical care services. Also employed were 1 198 midwives. 19 295 physicians were also recorded as employed by Austrian hospitals during the year under review.
