Teaching staff

Teaching staff in general and vocational schools

In the 2008/09 academic year there were altogether 123 148 teachers (incl. teacher in maternity leave) in general and vocational schools in Austria. The number of teaching staff in the different types of school and province (Bundesland) roughly reflected the distribution of student numbers. Approx. 60% of teachers were in the compulsory education sector, i.e. from school years 1-8/9. The other 40% of teachers were distributed through the advanced non-compulsory education sector. In absolute terms the greatest number of teachers was found in Vienna but the proportion of approx. 19% of all Austrian teachers closely corresponds to the relative proportion of the population.

Two-thirds of teachers in Austria's schools are women. In the primary school sector the proportion of women is around 90%. There is approximate parity of the sexes in the teaching staff in vocational schools and colleges. However the proportion in different branches of the vocational sector varies greatly. For instance, the proportion of women in colleges for business vocations is approx. 79%, whereas the proportion in technical and commercial colleges is 24%.

Teaching staff at public universities

There were 34 110 persons as academic staff at public universities in the 2010/11 academic year. Of these 2 232 were professors and 31 878 were other science and arts staff. The total proportion of women is 38%. It is worth noting that only 20% of professors are women.
