In the 2008/09 academic year there
were altogether 123 148 teachers (incl. teacher in maternity leave) in general and vocational schools
in Austria. The number of teaching staff in the different types of school
and province (Bundesland) roughly reflected
the distribution of student numbers. Approx. 60% of teachers were in
the compulsory education sector,
i.e. from school years 1
Two-thirds of teachers in Austria's schools are women. In the primary school sector the proportion of women is around 90%. There is approximate parity of the sexes in the teaching staff in vocational schools and colleges. However the proportion in different branches of the vocational sector varies greatly. For instance, the proportion of women in colleges for business vocations is approx. 79%, whereas the proportion in technical and commercial colleges is 24%.
