In 2011, the average running costs for a dwelling (main residence) were €125 or €1.73 per square metre of useful floor space.
Records relating to the level of running costs are only available for those dwellings (main residences) occupied against payment for which separate information on running costs has been provided. This question of the survey programme on housing costs was answered for approximately 83% of dwellings in 2004 (annual average); this percentage increased to 98.5% till 2011. Due to the closing of the gap between this percentage and the total number of dwellings (main residences) occupied against payment, the total monthly costs of dwellings for which running costs have been specified are moving ever nearer to the figure for all dwellings (€411 against €410 per dwelling, €5.71 as against €5.69 per square metre). In contrast to total housing costs, the increase of running costs during 2009 and 2011 was marginal (in 2009 €121 per dwelling and €1.69 per square metre). The level of running costs (per square metre) as a percentage of total housing costs (incl. costs for garaged/reserved car parking place) was 30.3% in 2011; the percentage was similar (31.0%) in 2010.
In almost all the Länder (federal provinces), the level of running costs as a percentage of total housing costs was slightly below the average of 30.3%. The only exceptions were the Länder of Tyrol (27.2%) and, in particular, Vorarlberg (25.3%), due to both the high total costs and the relatively low running costs in these Länder, and also Vienna with a running costs percentage of 33%. At €140 per dwelling and €1.99 per square metre, Vienna – followed by Salzburg (€125 and €1.82) – had the highest running costs nationwide.
