In 2011, the average costs for a rented dwelling (primary tenancy) – rent and running costs, optionally costs for heating, garaged/reserved car parking place; main residences – were €445 or €6.45 per square metre of useful floor space (sub tenancies or other legal relationships are not included here, even if a fee is paid in respect thereof). Compared with 2010, average housing costs for a dwelling (€431) were 3.4% higher for rented dwellings, also costs per square metre of useful floor space (€6.24) - changes in percent are calculated from unrounded data of the Excel-tables.
With average costs per dwelling of €547 in 2011, the highest costs were paid in Vorarlberg, followed at some distance by Salzburg (€506) and Tyrol (€492). The western Länder (federal provinces) were thus well above the Austrian average of €445, while Vienna (€452) and Upper Austria (€433), were just near the average (more than half of all rented dwellings - primary tenancies - are found in these Länder, and this has a considerable impact on the average). The lowest costs were recorded in the Länder of Lower Austria (€419), Styria (€406), Carinthia (€400) and also Burgenland (€392), with similar costs being registered in each province. With only slight changes, the same order is seen for the average costs per square metre of useful floor space, with Salzburg in the lead here with €7.89, followed by Vorarlberg (€7.62) and Tyrol (€7.02).
