Supply balance sheets

Supply balance sheets are used to represent the supply and use of agricultural production (food and feedstuffs). One key aspect is to provide information on the food sector subordinated to agriculture. But the balance sheets also provide information on such parameters as the degree of self-sufficiency or per capita consumption.

Supply balance sheets for the crop sector

Over the past crop year 2009/2010, Austria’s agriculture produced around 5.1 million tonnes of cereal, 844 800 tonnes of fruit, 656 100 tonnes of vegetables, 722 100 tonnes of potatoes, 326 700 tonnes of oil seeds, 3.1 million tonnes of sugar beet and 2.4 million hl of wine. The degree of self-sufficiency was 93 per cent for cereal, 85 per cent for wine, 69 per cent for fruit, 60 per cent for vegetables and 27 per cent for vegetable oils. The total agricultural foreign trade volume amounted to EUR 15.5 billion (imports: EUR 8.2 billion; exports: EUR 7.3 billion). This corresponded to a share of 7.6 per cent of the total foreign trade volume of EUR 203.0 billion.

The crop sector comprises 12 main groups with 90 detailed balances and refers to the period from July 1, to June 30 (crop year). For the wine balance, the crop year runs from August 1, to July 31; from 2007/08 on, the crop year for sugar runs from October 1, to September 30.
