2011 vegetable harvest

According to Statistics Austria, the vegetable production 2011 increased by 19% to 703 700 tons compared with 2010. In regard to the average production of the last five years an increase of 26% was noted. The area of vegetables cultivated for fruit was enlarged which caused a production-plus of 15% to 144 700 tons. In particular sweetcorn, tomatoes and cucumbers brought high quantities. Leafy and stalked vegetables including brassicas showed a rise of 10% and therefore reached a production of 178 700 tons. The main products were salads with 47 400 tons (+/-0% to 2010) and cabbage with 65 700 tons (+14% to 2010). The harvest of root and tuber vegetables including pulses increased to 380 300 tons (+26% to 2010), mainly caused by area-expansion and high yields of onions with 200 300 tons (+30% to 2010) as well as carrots with 109 000 (+27% to 2010).
