Number of deaths slightly decreased in last week of national lockdown

Vienna, 2021-12-23 – According to first preliminary results by Statistics Austria, a total of 2 111 people died in calendar week 49 (6 to 12 December 2021), which is 84 fewer deaths than in the previous week.

"In the second week of December, the number of deaths did not increase further for the first time in two months. However, deaths were still 32% above the five-year average for the same calendar week of the pre-Corona period 2015 to 2019. Last year, deaths reached a sad peak in calendar week 49 with 2 544 deaths and a clearly excessive mortality of +59% compared to the five years before," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
