Austrian population rose to 8.82 million at the beginning of 2018

Vienna, 2018-02-06 – 8 823 054 million people were living in Austria on 1 January 2018, according to preliminary results released by Statistics Austria. Compared to the beginning of 2017, the resident population increased by 50 189 (+0.57%). Hence, population growth in 2017 was significantly lower than in the previous year (2016: 72 394; +0.83%). A large share of the population growth (43%) was concentrated on the capital city Vienna, where the population increased by 1.15% in 2017.

At the beginning of 2018, some 1.4 million foreign nationals were living in Austria, representing a share of 15.8% of the total population (compared to 15.3% on 1 January 2017).
