14% fewer nights spent in September 2020 despite an increase in resident guests; nights spent in the current summer season 2020 almost a third below the previous year's level

Vienna, 2020-10-27 – According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, the number of nights spent by guests in Austria fell by 14.1% to 9.84 million in September 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year. Nights spent by foreign guests fell by 26.2%. The only exception were German guests, whose nights spent recorded a comparatively small drop of 4.9% to 4.42 million. Together with an increase in nights spent of 13.9% to 3.95 million by guests from Austria, this somewhat reduced the drop in nights spent in September.

The number of arrivals in tourist accommodation establishments was 2.79 million in September, 29.1% below the level of the previous year. The number of foreign guests fell by 43.9% to 1.46 million, while that of domestic guests stagnated (+0.1%) at 1.33 million.

As in previous months, the number of nights spent varied greatly from one federal states to another: while the decrease in Vienna was 75.1%, in Burgenland an increase of 23.0% was achieved. Increases in nights spent were also registered in Carinthia (+14.5%) and in Styria (+4.1%).

Current summer season 2020: 29.9% drop in nights spent

In the current summer season (May to September 2020), nights spent totaled 49.43 million, 29.9% below the level of the corresponding period of the previous year. While the number of nights spent by foreign guests fell by 40.6%, the number of nights spent by domestic guests was with -3.6% or 19.73 million only slightly below the previous year's period. The arrivals in the previous summer season decreased by 40.7% to 13.33 million.

For the most important countries of origin, double-digit falls in nights spent were reported, with the decrease among German guests being the lowest at 20.9% to 20.91 million nights spent, while the other countries of origin were in some cases well above the 30% mark.

Current calendar year 2020: 35 million fewer nights spent than in the previous year

In the current calendar year 2020 (January to September), 91.65 million nights spent were registered, 27.7% fewer than in the same period of the previous year. The decrease amounts to 35.04 million by the end of September. The arrivals decreased in the same period by 37.2% to 23.29 million.

Information on methods: Within the scope of the monthly overnight statistics, the arrivals and nights spent are provided by rented tourist accommodation establishments in communities with more than 1 000 nights spent per year. Thus, of the 2 095 Austrian communities, 1 566 reporting communities transmit data to Statistics Austria monthly. The survey units are commercial and private tourist accommodation establishments, which transmit their data to the relevant reporting community. The winter season considers the period November to April, the summer season the period May to October.
