2.6% more overnight stays in the ongoing tourism summer season 2019

Vienna, 2019-09-27 – With 58.91 million overnight stays in the ongoing tourism summer season (May to August 2019), an increase of 2.6% compared to the same period of the previous year was reached, according to preliminary data by Statistics Austria. The number of arrivals rose by 3.6% to about 18.48 million. A remarkably increasing demand for commercial holiday dwellings led to a rise of 8.0% in the number of nights spent and of 11.9% in arrivals in this accommodation category.

More guests and nights spent in August 2019

In August 2019, the number of nights spent (+1.6% to 20.08 million) and arrivals (+4.3% to 5.70 million) increased. The rise in nights spent is mainly due to the increase in overnight stays by guests from Germany (+2.9%), the most important country of origin. On the other hand, nights spent by guests from the Netherlands (-1.4%), Italy (-4.4%) as well as Switzerland and Liechtenstein (-2.4%) recorded decreases. Guests from Czech Republic (+11.3%), Poland and Romania (each +12.6%) achieved double-digit increases in overnight stays. Overall, the number of nights spent by non-residents, which account for almost three quarters of the overnight stays in August, went up by 1.6% to 14.72 million. The number of nights spent by residents reached 5.36 million (+1.4%).

January to August 2019: 115 million nights spent and 33 million guests

With about 115.18 million nights spent in the first eight months of 2019, a new all-time high was registered (+1.2% compared to the same period in 2018). Increases were recorded for the numbers of nights spent by residents (+0.9% to 28.81 million) and non-residents (+1.3% to 86.37 million). With a rise of 2.8% to 33.13 million guests, also the number of arrivals achieved a new record.
