Nearly 20 million overnight stays in the tourism summer pre-season 2019

Vienna, 2019-07-25 – 19.95 million overnight stays were recorded for the summer pre-season 2019 (May and June), according to preliminary results by Statistics Austria. This represents an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of nights spent by resident visitors increased by 2.8%, overnight stays of non-resident visitors by 3.8%. The number of arrivals also reached an all-time-high of 7.35 million (+4.6%) in the period May and June 2019. Apart from the United Kingdom and France, all foreign countries of origin showed increases in the respective period.

For June 2019, 12.49 million nights spent were registered, an increase of 15.9% compared to June 2018. This increase was due to shifts of religious holidays (Pentecost and Corpus Christi) from May 2018 to June 2019.

Summer pre-season gains importance

Comparing the last ten years, it becomes obvious that the pre-summer period gains importance. The total number of nights spent in the months May and June rose by 34.2% since 2009, with the number of nights spent by non-residents increasing more dynamically (+41.4%) than the number of nights spent by Austrian residents (+21.9%). Especially the Central and Eastern European countries of origin showed high growth rates: Poland +199.8%, Czech Republic +97.7%, Hungary +89.6%, Russia +87.7% and Romania +77.1%. In addition, nights spent in the summer pre-season by guests from the United States nearly doubled (+93.8%) during the last ten years. At the same time, the most important foreign country of origin – Germany – showed an increase in nights spent by 27.4%, which means a rise in absolute overnight figures of 1.5 million. In the last ten years, the volume of nights spent in the main summer months July and August has also increased. Therefore, no significant shift of the distribution of nights spent during the whole summer period was observed; the share of nights spent in the pre-summer season remains rather stable at about one forth.

First half of 2019: for the first time more than 76 million nights spent and over 22 million guests

About 76.23 million nights spent were registered in the first half of the calendar year 2019 (January to June 2019). This corresponds to a growth of 0.7%. Increases were recorded in the number of nights spent by residents (+0.9% to 18.59 million) as well as non-residents (+0.6% to 57.64 million). With a rise of 2.7% to 22.01 million guests, the number of arrivals also reached a new record value.
