Nearly 73 million overnight stays in winter season 2018/19

Vienna, 2019-05-29 – According to Statistics Austria's latest preliminary data, 72.88 million overnight stays were registered in the tourism winter season 2018/19 (November 2018 to April 2019) which means a rise by 1.4% compared to the previous winter season. The overnight stays of residents (+0.4% to 16.51 million) and non-residents (+1.8% to 56.37 million) increased. The number of arrivals increased by 2.8% to 20.39 million (non-residents: +3.9% to 14.52 million; residents: +0.3% to 5.87 million).  
At 3.6 overnight stays per person, the average length of stay in the winter season 2018/19 remained unchanged from the previous year's season.

The number of overnight stays of the most important foreign countries of origin Netherlands (+3.2% to 6.26 million) and Belgium (+4.4% to 1.71 million) increased. Other important countries of origin also showed increases: Czech Republic (+5.6%), Italy (+7.7%) and Denmark (+6.1%). The number of nights spent by guests from the most important country Germany decreased by 0.8% to 26.90 million.

In the winter season 2018/19 all accommodation establishments (except private accommodations: -3.7%) showed increasing figures of overnight stays. The highest relative rise was registered for commercial holiday dwellings (+5.5% to 7.83 million).

Information on methods: Within the scope of the monthly overnight statistics, the arrivals and nights spent are provided by rented tourist accommodation establishments in those communities which have more than 1 000 overnight stays per year. Thus, of the 2 096 Austrian communities, 1 558 reporting communities transmit data to Statistics Austria monthly. The survey units are commercial and private tourist accommodation establishments, which transmit their data to the relevant reporting community by means of "Statistisches Meldeblatt" or "Betriebsbogen".
