Current tourism winter season 2018/19: 31.7 million overnight stays and 9.4 million arrivals

Vienna, 2019-02-27 – In the first three months of the current winter season 2018/19 (November 2018 to January 2019), 31.74 million overnight stays and 9.36 million arrivals were registered in Austria's accommodation establishments, according to preliminary data by Statistics Austria. Compared to the same period in the previous year, the number of overnight stays rose by 2.9%, the number of arrivals by 3.1%.

Mainly non-resident tourists (+3.8% to 24.26 million) contributed to the positive development of nights spent while the number of nights spent by resident tourists faced a slight increase, only (+0.4% to 7.48 million).

Among the 15 most important non-resident markets, the number of overnight stays by guests from Germany (+3.0%), the Netherlands (+3.9%), Switzerland and Liechtenstein (+0.6%), United Kingdom (+3.9%), the Czech Republic (+6.7%), and Italy (+1.5%) increased compared with the same period of the previous winter season, but there was a decline in overnight stays by Russian (-8.2%) and Polish (-4.0%) guests.

Commercial holiday dwellings (+9.0%) showed the highest groth in overnight stays, the number of nights spent in private accommodation establishments declined (-3.7%).

January 2019: 2.1% less overnight stays

In January 2019, the number of nights spent decreased by 2.1% to 15.10 million. This negative result was caused by resident (-2.4% to 2.79 million) as well as non-resident (-2.0% to 12.31 million) tourists. The decline in overnight stays by guests from Germany (-3.9% to 6.42 million) and the Netherlands (-3.6% to 1.13 million) was the main reason of the decrease in January 2019 compared to January 2018.
