– A total of 66 313 enterprises in
the entire industry and construction sector
(+0.8% compared to the previous year) turned over €129.8 bn (-12.9%)
in the first half of 2020,
according to calculations by Statistics Austria. The working-day adjusted
turnover for industry and construction decreased by 13.1%. These figures
coupled with a slightly decreasing employment (987 799 persons, -0.9%).
In June 2020, turnover decreased by 7.3%
compared to the same month of the previous year (working-day adjusted:
-11.4%).
At establishment level
(66 878 establishments, +0.8%), sold production decreased by 13.1% (working-day
adjusted: -13.3%) in comparison to previous year's level and amounted
to €127.6 bn in nominal terms (employing 987 249 persons, -0.9%). With
€106.0 bn in nominal terms, industrial production sold fell by 14.8%
compared to the previous year. Compared to the same month last year
(June 2019), sold production declined by 7.4% (working-day adjusted:
-11.6%) in industry and construction.
The 36 485 Austrian construction
establishments (+1.3%) achieved a production sold of €21.7 bn in the
reporting period January to June 2020.
This corresponds to a decrease of 4.3% in nominal terms (working-day
adjusted: -4.4%) compared to the previous year. In June 2020, production
sold slightly increased by 0.5% (working-day adjusted: -3.6%). At the end
of June 2020, Austrian construction
companies (not including construction auxiliary trades) had orders booked
totalling about €16.7 bn (-1.5% year-over-year).
The flash estimates
for industry and construction for August 2020
continue to show a decline in the turnover index (-5.7%), the index of
persons employed (-0.2%) and the index of hours worked (-0.9%) compared
to the same month of the previous year. If the industrial sector is
considered separately from construction, the turnover index shows a
decline in industry (-7.8%) but a positive development in construction
(+5.0%). The index of hours worked shows a decline in industry (-3.1%),
while construction again shows a positive development (+5.8%). This
is also reflected in the index of persons employed (industry -1.2%; construction
+3.0%).
