This statistical compendium on the health care system in Austria provides information on a wide range of topics relating to illness in the population (cancer incidences, hospital admissions, etc.) as well as on the range of causes of death and the effects on life expectancy. Moreover, the hospital system, social insurance and health expenditure are presented both from a national perspective and in an international comparison.

Following a textual account, systematic terms are defined in the explanatory notes. The tables section first provides demographic data that is relevant to the health care system, in particular data on fertility and its characteristics. Mortality and causes of death are then presented in detail. The health status of the population, health services and health care staff, and health expenditure constitute the main section of the publication. The volume is completed by an international comparison of the main data. A number of the time series date back to the 19th century.

This publication continues a series from STATISTICS AUSTRIA that has been available since 1957. The accompanying CD-ROM contains the entire publication as well as data from the publication broken down in more detail and important data from the previous year’s publication. The Excel format used for the data ensures ease of processing.
